Tree Surgery and Hedge Cutting in Denbigh | When to Prune Trees and Hedges

When a tree or hedge needs pruning, it is important to carry out work at the right time of year. Otherwise, you risk damaging the plant and may even fall foul of the law. With over 20 years of combined experience, the tree surgeons at GB Hedges & Trees have expert knowledge of when and how to prune all types of hedges and trees. Below, we explain key factors which influence the timing of tree surgery and hedge cutting.

Based in Bordon, we work with a wide range of customers in the surrounding Hampshire and Surrey areas, including Denbigh and Guildford. We are ready to help with all your tree, hedge and garden care needs.

In addition to general tree and hedge maintenance, we provide stump grinding and garden clearance. These services can be undertaken at any time of the year and are ideal for improving the look and function of outdoor areas.

Hedges

We generally carry out hedge cutting between spring and summer. When planning hedge pruning, we must consider the potential for nesting birds – the Wildlife and Countryside Act makes it illegal to purposely damage or destroy active nests, eggs and chicks. If there are any signs of nesting birds, it is necessary to delay work until after the nesting season, which runs from March to August.

How often your hedge requires pruning will depend on its location and whether it is formal or informal. Our tree surgeons in the Denbigh area recommend trimming informal hedges once a year and formal hedges two to three times a year. Hedge maintenance can include tree surgery if trees are present within a hedgerow.
To prevent obstruction, hedge cutting may be required more frequently for hedges which border a path or road.

Trees

Generally, it is best to prune trees in late spring through summer, after the leaves have hardened. However, the best time to complete pruning will depend on the type of tree. For example, some species will bleed sap if pruned in early spring – birch, walnut and maples included. This can result in the loss of valuable sugars. Consequently, these trees should be pruned in summer or midwinter when there is a lower risk of this.

To defend against wound-related pathogens, some species in Denbigh and the surrounding areas rely on the production of a resin or gum. It is best to prune these trees in summer to avoid leaving exposed wood open to severe conditions such as drought, frost and fungal sporulation.

Furthermore, where trees present a hazard, it is best to carry out tree surgery as soon as possible. Our tree surgeons will advise on the correct timings for your job after assessing the type and condition of each tree.

GB Hedges & Trees can also provide tree work and hedge cutting as part of garden clearances. In addition, we carry out stump grinding to completely remove tree stumps. We offer this service for new and existing tree stumps.
